It is also widely applied in the dairy industry to concentrate proteins and remove lactose, and in the pharmaceutical sector to sterilize liquids without heat. The membranes are typically made from polymers like polysulfone or polyethersulfone and are configured in hollow fiber or spiral-wound modules. Maintenance involves regular backwashing and chemical cleaning to prevent membrane fouling and extend operational life.
