Troi Serial Plug-in can be reinitialized without quitting FileMaker Pro. This makes it possible to accommodate new or different serial ports dynamically, for example when you plug in a USB to serial adaptor.

You can define this script step to use any calculation expression to determine the next serial value of a field that has been defined as an auto-entry serial number field. The calculation always evaluates to a text result.

I am relatively new to FMP, and am just beginning to work with scripts and relationships. I currently have a database with over 900 records, and I now need to assign serial numbers to my records. Is there a way to automatically add serial numbers to existing records? Would I use a script, and if so, what would it look like? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Note that on the Mac, you need to have an adapter for a serial scale. The preferred Tripp-Lite/Keyspan USA19-HS adapter requires drivers which will not work with macOS Big Sur. There are some serial to Bluetooth adapters which will provide connectivity for macOS.

I'm writing a script that's intended to work for multiple layouts and table occurrences. For each, it will determine the primary key and then find the maximum value in any record for that primary key field. That's all working well. Now, I've computed my intended next serial value and would like to assign this to a field whose name I have saved in a variable. I am unable to specify the target field by using a variable. I only see an option for selecting the table and field from a list of existing fields.

Before we had Set Next Serial Value, we used Replace Field Contents to get the same effect, but it's more complicated, although it will allow you to do it dynamically. The basic idea is that you'll need to be on the record that has the maximum serial number, isolate that record, make sure you're on a layout with the serial number field, go to that field, and use Replace Field Contents to set the field to itself while also updating the next serial value. The script would look something like this:

Here is something I've used for something else, but adapted it to get all Macs in the JSS for you. Seems like that is what you might want. You can modify that to only get serial and name, but if it is your inventory system you are trying to populate, you might consider exporting as much information as possible.

All the heavy lifting is done. Now, all that remains is changing your Widgets::serial_number field to get its value from the Defaults::next_serial field. An auto-enter calculation might be the simplest way to do this.

The process is actually quite simple, but not so obvious when you start thinking about all the scripting you might have to do for all the various tables and connections within your solution. The benefits of switching to a UUID key based system is that you no longer have worry about duplicates with disconnected files and you also gain the piece of mind that you don't have to worry about updating the serial value every time you perform an export/import process for updating a database which is not updated directly within production.

So, in this video, I show the easiest method for moving from using serial key values to using the more modern UUID values. If you have an older FileMaker system and you'd like to update it to UUID keys, then this video should have all the info you need.

Hi Matt,Nice video, my question is very simple if am building a new invoicing solutions i don't want to use serial id for my invoice number how does this work.Can I use the first four numbers, or the last four numbers of the uuid, or do I have to use the entire number as an invoice number.
